When a shipment matters, how it is handled matters. A university degree, signed property paper, Diwali parcel, relocation box, or business sample may be difficult to replace once it leaves your hands. The real job is not simply moving it from San Francisco to India. It is making sure the shipment is accepted, described properly, packed for the journey, collected from the right address, and ready for the receiver to complete any India-side customs steps.
San Francisco has something many U.S. cities do not: a direct air connection with India. Air India currently sells nonstop SFO-Delhi services, reflecting the Bay Area’s strong links with India for study, work, family and business. For a sender, the practical questions go beyond transit time: where the shipment can be handed over, what affects the quote, how it should be packed, how tracking works and what the receiver may need for Indian customs.
Couriers To India lists a California drop-off point at 641/900 Folsom St, San Francisco, CA 94107, in SoMa. Doorstep pickup can also be requested, subject to the ZIP code and booking conditions. You can bring the shipment to the listed San Francisco location, or ask us to check collection from a home, office, campus, or other serviceable address.

A useful quote begins with the shipment, not a generic rate card. We need to know what is inside, where in San Francisco it is being collected, the receiver’s six-digit Indian PIN code, and the final size and weight after packing. Those details tell us whether the shipment fits the service, what may affect the price and what information the receiver should have ready in India.
Before asking for a price, record the San Francisco pickup ZIP code, Indian PIN code, carton count, exact contents, actual weight and outside measurements. Those details give us what we need to assess the shipment correctly. See how our service works.
If you use the Folsom Street drop-off, confirm the current handover instructions before travelling. If you request pickup, give us the full address and anything the driver needs to know before arriving: apartment number, reception desk, loading entrance, campus building or access code where appropriate. A precise pickup instruction is a small detail that can prevent a failed collection.
A degree certificate does not need the same preparation as three boxes of used clothes. A family gift is not declared like a commercial sample. Separating these shipment types early makes the process easier to follow. It clarifies what can be accepted, how it should be packed, what is needed for the quote and what the receiver may need in India.
The importance of an original document is rarely reflected by its weight. A transcript may be tied to an admission deadline; a power of attorney may be needed for a property matter; a signed agreement may be holding up a business decision. Couriers To India accepts permitted university, legal, property and business documents under its USA document service. The current document tier allows up to 15 pages and shows an estimated 3-5 working-day transit window to most major Indian cities.
Check our USA document courier service before sending irreplaceable originals.
A family parcel can be emotionally important even when its declared value is modest. It may contain clothes for a wedding, books for a student or gifts for Diwali or a birthday. Before packing, list every type of item clearly. “Used clothing” or “books” tells us and Customs far more than “gift” or “personal items”. Clear descriptions help us screen the contents before pickup and reduce avoidable questions later.
Review our gift service together with the prohibited-items list before packing.
Moving back to India changes the problem completely. Several boxes of clothes, books and other accepted personal belongings can be awkward to manage through airport check-in, especially when you are also travelling with normal luggage. Sending suitable personal effects separately gives you time to divide the contents sensibly, label each carton, remove restricted items and prepare the records that may be needed for India-side clearance.
Permitted used clothing, books, footwear and other personal belongings may be suitable for our excess-baggage service. Keep a separate inventory for each box. Also keep your travel documents available in case they are needed for personal-effects clearance in India.
Read our USA excess baggage service before booking a multi-box move.
India’s Baggage Rules 2026 changed the framework for passenger baggage from 2 February 2026. Personal-effects treatment depends on the traveller, timing and actual goods, so used belongings should never be assumed to be automatically duty-free.
For a business sender, a delayed sample or unclear declaration can affect a wider project. Companies around SoMa, Mission Bay, South Beach, the Financial District, Potrero Hill and Dogpatch may need to send approved samples, printed material, non-dangerous components or business documents to Indian teams, customers or suppliers. Start with precise product information: the actual goods, quantity, declared value and Indian receiver. For repeat shipments, keep those details and carton specifications accurate for every booking; each shipment should still receive its own quote and documentation check.
For a business shipment, give us the exact item description, quantity, declared value and receiver details before pickup. Some goods may need extra U.S. export information or India-side commercial documents, depending on the item and value.
For business shipments, use our commercial courier service and request a shipment-specific quote.
The transport price should be clear before you hand over the shipment. Our published USA page gives the accepted document and box limits and the estimated transit windows, but it does not display a fixed dollar price for these tiers. The live quote therefore has to be based on the actual San Francisco shipment rather than a headline price that may not fit your box.
| Service | Capacity | Dimensions | Current USA Rate | Estimated Transit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Priority documents | Up to 15 pages | 380 x 265 mm | Request current quote | 3-5 working days |
| Small box | Up to 17 lb / 8 kg | 16 x 12 x 12 in | Request current quote | 4-7 days |
| Medium box | Up to 38 lb / 17.5 kg | 18 x 18 x 16 in | Request current quote | 4-7 days |
| Large box | Up to 56 lb / 25.5 kg | 18 x 18 x 24 in | Request current quote | 4-7 days |
The 75 lb / 34 kg extra-large box is not accepted under our standard USA service because carriers impose a $145 USD oversize surcharge on that size. Please use one or more of the accepted box sizes above.
For a current quote, send the San Francisco pickup ZIP code, the receiver’s six-digit Indian PIN code, a clear contents list and the number of cartons. Once each box is sealed, include its actual weight and outside dimensions. Those measurements matter because international couriers can charge on volumetric weight when a box takes up more space than its scale weight suggests. For multi-box or excess-baggage shipments, ask for the current weight-based rate. Any Indian duty, tax or customs charge assessed at destination is separate from the transport quote.

Our U.S. transport prices do not include Indian duties or taxes. The quote can also change with chargeable weight, contents, destination PIN code and applicable service surcharges. Our current Delivery Policy states that remote-area delivery may attract a surcharge of at least $22 or $5/kg, whichever is higher. Transit times are estimates, not guaranteed delivery dates. Our current U.S. service information states that standard limited-liability coverage is included, while broader insurance options may be available. If loss or damage would be difficult to absorb, confirm the available protection before dispatch.
Use our package measurement guide before requesting the final quote.
San Francisco is not a one-size-fits-all pickup city. A South Beach high-rise may require a loading entrance; a Mission Bay laboratory may have controlled access; a Richmond District home may simply need the sender available at the agreed time. Use the listed SoMa drop-off when that is easier, or request doorstep pickup and give us the building details before collection is confirmed.
Our Folsom Street drop-off is in SoMa. Nearby Mission Bay includes UCSF Mission Bay and a major research and healthcare cluster, while South Beach and the Financial District contain dense residential and office buildings. For pickups from these areas, provide any reception, loading or building-access instructions along with the street address.
These neighborhoods combine dense housing, smaller businesses, and mixed residential-commercial streets. For family parcels, documents, or relocation cartons, use the exact unit number and ZIP code and make sure the driver has a working contact number for access.
The Richmond and Sunset districts extend across San Francisco’s west side and include many residential areas. Doorstep pickup can be more practical here than travelling across the city with a heavy carton, particularly for multi-box personal-effects shipments.
For nearby Bay Area origins such as Daly City, South San Francisco, San Bruno or Oakland, provide the actual collection ZIP code before booking. These are separate cities, so pickup conditions should be confirmed individually rather than presented as if they were San Francisco neighbourhoods.
For secured apartment towers, offices, university buildings, and medical or research campuses, include the unit or suite number, reception instructions, loading access, and a working sender phone number. Providing those details reduces the risk of a failed collection.
Many avoidable customs problems begin with incomplete receiver information. For a parcel containing goods, the receiver in India may need KYC for courier clearance. CBIC allows an individual receiver to use Aadhaar, Passport, PAN or Voter ID, and the delivery address must also be recorded. A letters-or-documents-only shipment is exempt from this KYC requirement when the authorised courier verifies that no goods are enclosed. Use the receiver’s real name, working phone number and deliverable address from the beginning.
Describe the shipment in plain language and be specific about what is inside. U.S. Customs and Border Protection advises against vague cargo descriptions such as ‘gift’, ‘sample’ or ‘miscellaneous’ when the actual commodity can be described more clearly.

Some high-value, commercial or regulated exports may need Electronic Export Information or other U.S. export details. If your shipment falls into one of these categories, check the requirements before pickup.
There is no single customs duty rate for every parcel sent from San Francisco to India. Indian Customs can look at the item, declared value, purpose and customs classification. A parcel is not automatically duty-free because it is a gift or is being sent by a family member.
Our Terms & Conditions explain that customs duties, taxes and clearance charges are outside our control and may be payable before delivery.
Check the Couriers To India prohibited-items list before you seal the box. Current restricted categories include batteries and battery-operated equipment, flammables, jewellery, watches, food, health supplements, medicines, cosmetics, plant products, alcohol, tobacco, dangerous goods, cash-like items, and precious metals or stones.
Before pickup, review the full Couriers To India prohibited-items list.
A good carton does two jobs: it protects what you are sending and avoids paying for unnecessary empty space. International courier pricing can compare the box’s actual scale weight with its volumetric weight and use the higher figure. That is why a large, lightly packed box can cost more than a smaller carton carrying the same items.
Our published formula is: Length x Width x Height in inches / 139 = volumetric weight in pounds. In metric units, Length x Width x Height in centimetres / 5,000 = volumetric weight in kilograms.
For example, a 24 x 18 x 18 inch carton has a volumetric weight of about 56 lb. If the physical weight is only 40 lb, the higher 56 lb figure can become the chargeable weight.
Use a strong carton, remove unnecessary empty space and prevent the contents from moving. Our packaging guide recommends a minimum of 8 cm of bubble wrap around fragile accepted items. Any shipment with a longest side over 120 cm may also attract additional handling costs.
See our Packaging Guide and measurement guide before sealing the shipment.
For India delivery, the city name is not enough. Couriers To India currently states that its network reaches more than 19,000 active PIN codes. The receiver’s exact six-digit PIN code lets us check the real delivery area and whether remote-area conditions may apply.
For smaller towns and remote addresses, provide the exact PIN code before dispatch. Remote-area charges or additional delivery time can apply depending on the final location.
A 3-5 or 4-7 day transit estimate is not the same as a promise that the item will be in the receiver’s hands on a fixed date. Pickup, carrier processing, flight routing, Indian customs, receiver KYC and final delivery all sit inside the real journey. If the shipment is tied to an admission deadline, property appointment, wedding, Diwali or a move, work backwards from the date it is genuinely needed and leave room for the steps you cannot control.
Our Delivery Policy explains that delivery times are estimates and that customs or regulatory processing can continue after the shipment arrives in India.
Read our Delivery Policy before planning a shipment around a fixed deadline.
Our USA rate page lists the accepted document and parcel tiers, while the current transport price is confirmed by quote. Send us the San Francisco pickup ZIP code, Indian PIN code, exact contents, actual weight and sealed dimensions so we can confirm the current transport rate. Any Indian duties or taxes assessed at destination are separate.
Yes. We currently list our California drop-off point at 641/900 Folsom St, San Francisco, CA 94107, in SoMa. Confirm the current handover instructions before travelling to the location.
Provide the pickup ZIP code, India PIN code, shipment type, number of cartons, exact contents, actual weight and outside measurements for every box.
Permitted documents, clothing, books and other accepted personal or commercial goods may be suitable. The exact contents should always be checked against our prohibited-items list before pickup.
Yes, subject to our excess-baggage conditions and Indian customs treatment. Keep a box-by-box inventory and retain the travel documents that may be needed for personal-effects clearance.
The authorised courier or customs process may require receiver identification and address evidence. The receiver’s shipment details should match the documents they are prepared to provide.
Do not assume so. Indian Customs can assess duty or tax according to the item, value, purpose and current import rules. We do not control the amount assessed by Customs.
Do not pack laptops, phones, power banks or other battery-powered devices in a standard shipment. Our current prohibited-items list includes batteries and batteries contained in battery-operated equipment.
Our current prohibited-items list includes food, medicines and tonics, health supplements and cosmetics. Do not pack these items in a standard shipment; review the current prohibited-items list before sealing the carton.
Our current USA page shows 3-5 working days for priority documents and 4-7 days for the listed parcel tiers, but these are estimated transit windows rather than guaranteed final-delivery dates. Keep the tracking reference after booking and allow additional time for Indian customs and final delivery.
To send from San Francisco, share the pickup ZIP code, Indian PIN code, exact contents and number of cartons with Couriers To India. Add the sealed weight and dimensions of each box. We can then confirm the suitable service, current transport rate and the preparation needed before handover.
